How about when they marketed the Chevy Nova in Mexico, where it’s name means, “It doesn’t go.”
There was also a while back (showing my age) the “Coke Adds Life” campaign, with a very catchy jingle that, when translated directly to the Japanese market, became “Coke Brings Your Dead Ancestors Back.”
this reminds me of when they tried the slogan “I’m lovin’ it” in Japan without bothering to translate it at all (‘cuz all the cool Japanese kids speak english anyway, apparently. Or at least pretend to). The Japanese don’t really have a “V” or an “L” sound, so it sort of mutated into “I’m rubbin’ it”.
